It was the Pacheedaht First Nation that first inhabited this beautiful area at the mouth of the San Juan River. The mighty forests saw Port Renfrew develop into a thriving logging town but it is now tourism that is a large resource. The town is now being promoted by some as the quintessential west coast experience as it has endless opportunities for excellent outdoor recreation. World famous for Botanical Beach, the West Coast Trail and the increasingly popular Avatar Grove, Port Renfrew was also a top 5 finalist for the Ultimate Fishing Town Canada 2011. Surfers are often spotted at Pacheedaht beach but it is nearby Sombrio beach that is the real surfer's paradise. Wildlife enthusiasts can hope to see black bears, cougars, elk, deer, wolves and over 500 species of resident and migratory birds. Out on the ocean you may see orca, gray and humpback whales as well as porpoises, dolphins, sea lions and seals.
The San Juan Market is open daily 11-7 and is well stocked for basics and is a liquor outlet. There are a few great local restaurants, however not all are year round. Adjacent to the cottage development is Tomi's Diner and seasonal businesses include an artist gallery and gift shop and an ice cream store! For further information please visit renfrewchamber.com.
